Let’s talk about the shorter side of YouTube video. Now you can create and share short videos with YouTube Shorts. While short-form content on YouTube isn’t new, it does have a new name: Shorts. Launched in 2021, Shorts is YouTube’s answer to TikTok, Instagram Reels, and other viral video platforms. But is it worth your time?

In simple words, YouTube Shorts are vertical, short-form videos that you can create or watch on YouTube. You can enhance Shorts with features such as video segmenting, app-based recording, and musical overlays. Shorts must be 60 seconds or less and do not disappear like Instagram Reels or Snapchats.

Youtube shorts are like tiktok videos which are short and sweet. The launch of YouTube Shorts comes at a time when many social media platforms are making a drastic pivot towards video content — specifically short-form content.

In March 2021, less than a year later, the Shorts beta was fully released in the U.S., quickly surpassing 6.5 billion daily views. By July 2021, Shorts officially launched globally in over 100 countries. Today, a few things have changed. Most notably, the time limit on Shorts has expanded to 60 seconds, and many creators take advantage of every second. In fact, more than 70% of Shorts are longer than 15 seconds.

How to make money with YouTube Shorts?

Shorts have been a rich source of extra views and engagement for many creators. But there’s been some confusion over how to make revenue from them.

There are many ways to make money via Shorts, like brand deals. But the two easiest ways are via the YouTube Partner Program and YouTube’s own Shorts Fund.

Eligibility for a Shorts:

-Creator Be located in an eligible country (check the details from YouTube here)

-Must Be at least 13 years old in the US, or at the age of majority where the fund is active.

-Must Follow YouTube’s Community guidelines and Monetization policies – in other words, your account must be in good standing.

-Have uploaded an original Short in the last 180 days.

-Must accept the terms of the program and link to an active Google AdSense account to receive the bonus payments from the Fund.

One more thing, YouTube will only reward the best of the best, based on viewership and engagement from the previous month. A creator’s YouTube Shorts videos will count toward their Shorts performance each month they receive views on them (not just the month they were uploaded). The payment amounts will be adjusted based on a channel’s total Shorts performance and their audience’s location.
